Sony BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc Player Review

A week or so ago I replaced my Sony BDP-S300 Blu Ray Disk player with a new model, the BDP-S570. The S570 is one of Sony's newest players, and in the middle of their consumer line as far as model lineup. It was amazingly low priced at 9 with free shipping on the Sony Style web site.

I decided to upgrade from the S300 for two main reasons. First, the load times on the S300 are excruciatingly slow, and second it cannot bitstream the newest audio codecs so I was forced to use its on-board decoder and analog output. With my new Emotiva prepro I wanted to reduce cable complexity and use HDMI only.

I started doing some research into the newest crop of BRD players and was convinced I would probably get the Oppo 83. But a few reviews on CNET and elsewhere said the S570 had "the fastest load times ever tested" and they ranked it as faster than and 83. It also has some of the new whiz-bang stuff like wifi, SACD compatibility, Netflix and Amazon streaming, Profile 2.0, 1Gb internal memory, HDMI 1.4 and 3D capability. So I looked up the Sony and found it was half the price of the Oppo, and decided to go for it. I figured that for 0 if I hated it I could send it back or pawn it off onto someone else.

Impressions of the Sony S570:
If you are an equipment snob like me and want your gear to feel substantial, like a quality device, this machine is NOT for you. I thought the box was empty when it arrived. The machine feels like it weights a few ounces (actually it weighs 2Kg or about 4 1/2 pounds.) Upon opening it, I was even more disappointed. this thing is super cheap feeling - you know how some plastic feels "good" and other plastic feels "cheap" and flimsy? This feels cheap. The buttons on the front are almost repulsive little Chiclets about the size of the buttons on my cell phone and remind me of some kind of toy made by Coleco. The disc tray feels like I will break it if I push it in. At least the remote is pretty nice so I won't have to touch the cheesy buttons. If just feels cheap. The power cord is molded into the chassis. The chassis is a non-standard size, which always drives me mad. It is almost a standard rack width at 17" wide, but it is only 8" deep, meaning it is too shallow for any other piece of gear to sit on top of it. I had to rig some rear "feet" for my DVR to sit it on top the Sony. Initial impressions were not good at all and I thought I had made a mistake buying this thing. At least once it is in the rack it doesn't look cheap. The all-black front is not as nice as the blue tinted plastic on the S300, but it looks like it belongs in a good equipment rack. Just don't touch it.

The connectors on the back feature a single HDMI jack, component and composite video, stereo analog audio (that goes with the composite video), Ethernet, digital coax and optical, and USB. There are no multichannel analog audio outputs if you need these, and I found it odd that it would offer legacy video outputs but force anyone using those to only use digital audio or HDMI for high-resolution audio. The USB connector is interesting as it allows the user to connect a memory stick (and the promise later a hard drive) for storing downloaded video. There is also a USB connector on the front and the machine can display a variety of digital image formats and play back a variety of digital audio formats directly from the USB connections, or via its networking capability. So while I probably won't use it as such, the machine has the ability to serve as a media hub. That's pretty nice.

I plugged it in and connected via HDMI to my pre-pro. The remote codes were in the Harmony database. I fired it up and went through the very logical and intuitive setup routine on-screen without having to refer to the owner's manual. I connected it to my network wirelessly (it has 801.n wireless built in) and had it check for a firmware update. There was one, so before I could try it I let it download and update which took about 15 minutes to complete. After it rebooted, I started exploring.

The user interface looks exactly like the PS3. This is not surprising since this box is pretty much the PS3 without the gaming capability or any on-board hard drive. It was intuitive and easy to navigate. I went to the setup screens and went through all the settings to see if I needed to adjust anything. Then I popped in a Blu Ray disc (Up.)

Wow. I was shocked. Where the old S300 would give me several "loading" screens and I could almost walk the half mile to the nearest Starbucks, get a latte and walk back before a disc was ready to play, this thing flashed the screen a couple of times and boom, it was ready to go. It was literally the fastest load I'd ever seen, faster than the CD player in my car can load a CD. Very impressive. The picture quality was also outstanding, as I expected. The sound, however, was not right.

"Up" has a dts-HD soundtrack, and the Emotiva processor told me the Sony was sending it multi-channel PCM. Hmm. I went back into the setup screens and it said dts was set to output as dts, but there did not seem to be any settings associated with the HD codecs. Hmm again. So I stopped the disc and thumbed through the owners manual. No mention of anything special I need to do. Time to hit up Google. Nothing obvious came up. Back to the owner's manual and I notice in the troubleshooting section a problem called "Dolby True HD and dts HD bitstream does not work." Aha. It seems one must set a user setting called "BD Audio Mix Output" to "OFF" and then the high def codecs will bitstream. Oh really? So I did this, and boom the Emotiva told me the sound track was dts-HD. There is no where other than this troubleshooting guide that mentions this, and the setup information says the "BD Audio Mix" function has something to do with the secondary audio tracks.

So, if any of you purchase this box or it's siblings, be sure to set this function to "OFF" if you have a pre-pro that decodes the new codecs.

After enjoying "Up" I tried the Netflix streaming function and cued up "The King of California." It came up on the screen surprisingly quickly, and the video quality was not HD but acceptable for casual viewing. It did seem to have to re-buffer too often, but perhaps adding a nice big 32G memory stick to the rear USB port will help this.

Next I tried playing back an SACD (Madman Across The Water.) The S570 outputs SACD as either Multi-PCM or Multi-channel DSD. I had set it to DSD, but the Emotiva will not accept a DSD input. The Sony detected this via the HDMI handshake and output the music as multi-channel PCM. It sounded pretty darn good.

Bottom line, my bias against cheap-feeling gear was wrong and I love this box. I didn't think I'd ever use the Profile 2.0 BD-Live features or something like Netflix streaming but I was wrong, I had a good time checking it out. I still think I'll never use the 3D features but who knows. I am happy I bought this and feel it is one of the best bargain buys I have ever made for my HT.

If however it really is as cheap as it feels and it breaks down after a few months, I'll be sure to let everyone here know.

Getting The Best Picture From Blu-ray:

Blu-ray players are manufactured to work on any TV that has component inputs, regardless if the TV is High Definition or not. However, having a Blu-ray player connected to a HDTV (High Definition TV) via the HDMI or component video inputs will allow you to get the full HD experience from your Blu-ray Player. So even though connections can be made to any TV with at least composite video inputs, in order to get the high definition Blu-ray resolution(1080/24p) you really need a 1080p HDTV. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and is the new standard for transmitting uncompressed digital data from your player to your TV set, just make sure all your devices have HDMI outputs or inputs. HDMI cables can be expensive, try to get a package deal where these are included with the product you're buying.

First, you should know the difference between a HDTV (High Definition TV) and HD Ready TV, you only have to remember one key difference: if your set has a built-in digital tuner it is HDTV, if it doesn't have this built-in tuner, it is HD Ready. So when a HDTV is labeled HD Ready, it means a television set does not include a built-in tuner for receiving over the air signals in high definition through an antenna. To overcome this problem, if you have HD cable, the box provided to you by the service provider will receive the HD signal necessary to give you high definition images on your HDTV. So even if you only have a HD Ready TV you will still have no problems watching Blu-ray high definition movies on it.

Now, having a 720p HDTV is recommended, but a 1080p HDTV would be your best option. This is because all blu-ray movies are stored on the disk in 1080p at 24 frames/second. You will often see this referred to as 1080p/24p. The original film was shot at this rate and the blu-ray format allows you to view the movie as the director wanted it to be seen. You should definitely be aware of older blu-ray players that were not capable of displaying 1080p/24p. These blu-ray players will convert the 1080p/24p signal to 1080p/60p using the '3:2 pulldown' technique. This means one frame is played 3 times and the next is played 2 times and so forth. One frame gets to be on the screen longer than the other causing a slight error in the video signal, commonly called telecine judder, the picture appears to have a slightly jerky movement.

Most of the newest blu-ray players have 1080/24 p output. But not all TVs can support 1080/24p. So feeding your 1080/24p signal into a television that cannot support it will result in the TV converting the incoming signal to 50 or 60Hz. This will also produce the telecine judder or vibration in the picture. Luckily most of the latest LCD and plasma TV set can now easily handle the 1080/24p signal.

To summarize, in order to get the best quality picture you need the following:

- Television that can support 1080/24p
- HDMI cable for connection

If you haven't had the pleasure of viewing a Blu-Ray movie or disc, you just may be asking yourself:

Why do I need a Blu-ray Player?

Here's your simple answer: You need a Blu-ray System for the High Resolution and Supreme Audio! But to really understand the full reasons behind owning a Blu-ray system, you much have a basic understanding of High Resolution, 1080p and High Definition Televisions.

Mainly because, high resolution is at the heart of why you should want a Blu-ray player. 1080i vs 1080p

If you have bought an HDTV set lately, you will know 720p,1080i and 1080p are terms used to describe the native resolution of an HDTV, this is the resolution that's shown on your HD Television whether it be a broadcast image or whether it's one produced from a disc. The numbers 720 or 1080 refers to the number of horizontal lines which fill the screen. Obviously since 1080 has the more lines, it will be the higher resolution. Standard definition is much lower at 480i.

There are usually just five common resolution standards. They are 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and

Standard DVD Resolution:

Why Is Blu-ray The Best?

Blu Ray VS HD DVD - Who Will Win The Format War ?

Blu-ray and HD DVD (High Definition DVD) are two conflicting storage technologies for digital media like high definition movies, games and other audio visual material. There are a few other technologies emerging but it seems that these two rivals are the big players in the battle for home consumers hearts and minds. So what are they, which one is better and who is likely to win the latest technology format war.

Blu-ray was created by the Blu ray Disc Association, an association of major consumer electronics producers, like Sony and Panasonic, as a high capacity storage device to replace the standard DVD format. HD DVD was developed by the DVD forum, an alternative association of high tech electronics producers, including Toshiba and NEC, as their replacement of standard DVD.

Both work on the same principle. They use a blue laser with a shorter wavelength than the standard red laser of Dvd's and CD's (405 nm compared to 650 nm). This allows for more storage space on a disc. More storage is vital as high definition video becomes an industry standard in movies, TV and video games.

Latest information on the storage capacities of each format sees blu-ray out in front. A single layer blu-ray disc can store 25 GB compared to HD DVD of 15GB. A dual layer blu-ray can store 50 GB while the HD DVD stores 30 GB. This would suggest that blu-ray can store more detail and thus provide better extra features to movies etc. Although this is not completely true as video compression influences the amount of information stored on a disc, the capacity is a significant difference between the two formats.

Initial blu-ray discs stored data close to the surface of the disk. This meant that if the disc was scratched in any way it would probably malfunction or jam when playing. Apparently a protective layer has now been introduced to newer blu-ray disc that protects the data much more. HD DVD have always stored the data deeper in the disc and are resistant to most minor scratching and wear and tear.

Although the underlying technology is important in a format war, it is more often the case of the people supporting each format that has more influence on the outcome.

Again, it seems like blu-ray has the advantage.

Blu-ray is supported by consumer electronics companies Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Sharp and Pioneer and a number of others. This suggests that they will produce products that are exclusively devoted to using the blu-ray technology. The most recent instance of this is the Sony Playstation 3 that features a blu-ray disc player.

In terms of computer technology companies, blu-ray is supported by Apple, Dell, Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard. Their disk drives will use blu-ray.

Possibly more significant for people interested in home entertainment are the major movie companies supporting blu-ray. These are 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Although Walt Disney and Warner Bros. are not supporting them exclusively and will produce movies in HD DVD format. At this point only Universal Pictures has an exclusive deal to produce HD DVD pictures.

On the HD DVD side possibly the biggest player is Microsoft. They have HD DVD readers in the X box games console and seem determined to throw their weight behind HD DVD.

Of the major consumer electronics companies, the most significant supporters of HD DVD are Toshiba, NEC and Kenwood.

In terms of computer component manufacturers, Intel is behind HD DVD.

Although it is still unclear who is winning the format war, it would seem that blu ray has some big supporters. Although HD DVD have some big names too, notably Microsoft. Prices of individual players and recording devices might also impact the success of each format. At this point most products are quite expensive but this will change with time.

High Definition DVD

High definition DVD, also known as HD-DVD (which actually stands for High Density
DVD), is one of two competing high definition storage format - the other being Blu-ray.

The need for a
new, high capacity storage format, has been primarily brought about by the rapid
rise in popularity of HDTV in Japan and the US. HDTV has much higher bandwidth
than either NTSC or regular DVD discs, so in order to record programs from HD-
DVD higher capacity discs, of at least 30GB, are required.

High definition video is also being used increasingly to make Hollywood movies as it
offers comparable quality to film at much less cost. Therefore, the studios plan to
release future movies on one or both high definition formats.

HD-DVD was developed by Toshiba and NEC and has the support of the DVD Forum,
along with a number of Hollywood studios. Currently those studios which have
announced support for HD-DVD are; Universal Studios, Paramount Studios, Warner
Bros., and New Line Cinema. It has a capacity of 15GB for single-sided discs and
30Gb for double-sided. It doesn't need a caddy or cartridge and the cover layer is
the same thickness as current DVD discs, 0.6mm. The numerical aperture of the
optical pick-up head is also the same as DVD, 0.65mm.

Because of its similarities to current DVD, high definition DVD is cheaper to
manufacture than Blu-ray, because it doesn't need big changes in the production
line set-up. Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray have backward compatibility with existing
DVDV discs. That is that current DVDs will play in HD-DVD player, although new
high definition DVD won't play in older DVD players.

High definition DVD currently supports a number of compression formats, including
MPEG-2, VC1 (based on Microsoft's Windows Media 9), and H.264 which is based on
MPEG-4 and will be supported by the next version of Apple's QuickTime software,
which will be included with Mac OS X Tiger.

5 Stars sounds really generous, but for the money this is a GREAT Network ready BDP.
This is the third network BDP I have set up and used, I recently reviewed the Samsung BD-P1590 - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling - Netflix, Pandora against which (for similar money) this is a far superior machine. I also think the picture quality and upscaling for SD DVD's in much better than the similar priced LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Running several Blu-Ray movies for testing, including BD live enabled content, boot times were very fast. The quick set up guide asks you about this and explains that it uses more power in standby mode, but it's worth it for very quick loading.
Blu Ray looks SUPERB - Panasonic web site says (PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction) Sounds geeky, but the picture is great at both 1080i and 1080p. By default the 24fps is set to off, but if you have a home set up that supports it, it's easy to switch back.
SD Card slot, and USB interface great for home pictures, movies and photo's, very easy to use. Nicely tucked away under a discreet panel in the front so no fiddling among the back wires.

Out of the box set up for networking took me about 15 minutes.
Very easy on screen instruction, easy to use remote, and set up can be either set to easy mode, or you can revisit the main menu at any time for finer adjustments on audio, video output, resolution and aspect ratio etc.
The more involved set up options are however a little limited if you are used to close to pro tweaking on high end visual and audio equipment. But then again, this is an entry level kind of priced machine.

What do you get for network? The VIERA system is a breeze, nice graphics, menu screen and options.
I hard wired mine to the back Ethernet port with a Cat6 cable - Cat5 works without a problem, but for streaming (especially HD content) the Cat6 made the Netflix signal bar light up to HD most of the time.
It is wireless ready. You can use a USB dongle (takes some tweaking) or better still a Linksys by Cisco Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter. What's nice is that(unlike Samsung) you don't have to buy a special adapter.
My preference would always be to hard line, but if that's not an option, and you must have wireless (assuming you have boat loads of bandwidth) you can buy an adapter, or pay more and buy it's big brother the Panasonic DMP-BD85 WiFi Enabled Blu-Ray Disc Player (Black)

Whats on the Network?

1)Netflix - unlimited free streaming movies (a lot in HD if your connection is good enough) documentaries, and TV shows from their "Watch Instantly" library, if you are a current subscriber of at least their .99 plan - free trial available.
2)Amazon on Demand - Bags of movies and content to rent, buy, or even view free webisodes, trailers, documentaries and so on. Not a huge thing for me personally as I like Netflix, but very nice to have. Simply activate online at Amazon and you're there - very easy on screen user friendly menus.
3)Blomberg - Sort of on screen RSS feed with stocks, bonds and news headlines. Nice to have but not essential.
4) Weather forecast, enter your zip code and set to default, or store multiple sites across the US for up to date weather news and information. Again, not something I need but nice to have.
5)Picasa Web albums - share pictures with friends and family, look at your own, and other albums on your TV. Nice feature.
6)Coming Soon?? - Your guess is as good as mine, could be for VUDU or something else, at least they are thinking ahead, and have the settings already started.

1)Pandora - a quirky to use online streaming internet radio site that's free with a lot of music. Doesn't float my boat either, I don't like radio sites that choose my music based on a song, or an artist - there are over 30,000 online internet radio stations that are free, Pandora doesn't let you search any particular station in any part of the World, just their selections on what they think you like.
2) Blockbuster Online - unless you have an account and use the in store returns on DVD and Blu stick with Netflix, their watch instantly movies are free with membership.
3)VUDU - next generation 1080p streaming to rent and buy, this would have been nice to have, but I can live without it for now. Amazon more than makes up for it as far as I'm concerned.
4) Any others I may have forgotten about (I'm sure there are more out there)

I bought this system yesterday. It has great, even sound and multiple sound fields for different situations (movies, games, sports, etc). I like that the speakers are small (the center channel speaker) disappears in front of my television. Also, there are 3 HDMI inputs for everything I need (Blu-Ray player, Computer, etc) and one output for the television. There are also inputs for analog and digital audio sources. One drawback is that the 'wireless' rear speakers are only wireless when coupled with the optional AIR EZW-T100 Wireless transmitter and the Wireless amplifier for the speakers (WAHT-SA10). This wasn't a problem until I found that the amplifier doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Even the SonyStyle store shows 'out of stock'. Aside from that, this is a great-looking and sounding system for a reasonable price. As long as you don't demand wireless rear speakers in the immediate future, I highly recommend it.

With so many common components like the LCD flat panel TV and a surround sound home audio system, it can sometimes be confusing when additional equipment such as an A/V receiver is needed to tie home theater equipment together. The functionality of an A/V receiver relies on everything being connected together properly. Once you've properly set up your receiver, home theater problems will generally vanish. Function of an A/V Receiver

An A/V receiver is what could be considered the "command center" of your home theater system. I already owned the DVP-CX995V Sony 400-disc DVD changer, and was so-so, if you want to use the drive directory for the selection of a DVD, then play you had to do with a switch for the remote! ! Another theme of the UI were also archaic and has failed to get names of many (about 65%) of the DVD from the media (while my PC is not), very good.

The new BDP CX960 is a substantial improvement:

1. The menu screen is much more comprehensive and capable, butTurn a bit 'of confusion when you first time. If you have "Home (Directory) menu while playing a disc (unlike the DVP-CX995V) immediately.

2. The ability to retrieve DVD / Blu-ray data from the Internet is a great improvement, and he missed only 2% of the disks.

3. Applying a firmware upgrade on the Internet was (with the DVP-CX995V transparent, ordered or upgrade) to burn a CD.

4. Finally, the best options for the appearance of control isratio. I know there are idiots in the universe that want every movie (no matter the aspect ratio) to fill the entire screen (no matter the distortion), but I'm not one of them.

5. The remote control is a LOT easier to use!

6. The claimed ability for the unit to control a compatible TV ("Bravia" ?) seems nice, but I don't have a Sony TV.

Minor criticisms & suggestions:

1. What's with the bright light that shines in the display when you play a Blu-ray disc? Is that to impress your friends??? I had to set the display to "dim" to make the "Blu-ray" light not be distracting in a dark room. Feature suggestion to Sony: Option to disable the !@#$% light. Sony, if you are going to go to the trouble of having a bright light, why not have it shine on the numbers in the carousel tray when the door is open (duh ...)?

2. Nit: Yes, I had a 1GB USB memory stick laying around, but how much money did that save Sony for extra memory?

3. What this unit REALLY NEEDS is an embedded web server (like virtually every other Internet-capable intelligent device on the planet) to provide a web interface over the Ethernet port for:

a. Controlling the device.

b. Keying in disc titles/genres/actors/etc. This would solve the keyboard interface issue without any additional hardware, and embedded web servers don't take much memory or computing power. You could also import images for the discs that don't have one (or the wrong one).

c. Saving & restoring disc titles/etc (preferably in XML format). Once my DVP-CX995V lost power, and the several dozen titles I had entered were gone (this was a MAJOR incentive to sell the DVP-CX995V). Granted, the Gracenote DB found virtually all of my current titles, but still ...

4. Nit: When playing music CDs, the remote's "TIME" button cycles between displaying on the TV the track time played, the track time left, the disc time played, and the disc time left. Ah, Sony, isn't there enough room on the TV screen for all four times???

5. Why oh why does this player (like the DVP-CX995V) think it has to load some disc (any disc) before it will respond to the remote control? Still, it's not as bad as the DVP-CX995V.

6. Nit: The unit displays (on its own display) the titles of music CDs when loaded, but not DVDs. Why??? This would be especially helpful if the title would be displayed as you rotated the carousel with the door open ...

Other comments:

1. This is a 1080p-capable HD device, primarily intended for HDMI output, although there is component output (won't send 1080p signals, though). Accordingly, there is no S-video output (although strangely enough, there is a composite video output).

2. Verizon's FiOS remote control worked with the DVP-CX995V, but has no compatible IR codes for the BDP-CX960, and the BDP-CX960 remote knew nothing about the Verizon FiOS STB or my Harman-Kardon receiver. Time to look at the Logitech remotes ...

3. Some reviewers (not here) have commented as to what's wrong with just having a well-organized bookshelf to hold your CDs/DVDs/BDs, instead of this unit? Answer: DISK HANDLING.

All in all, this is an excellent product for my purposes, and the nits are only how to make the product better (all but one of my suggestions could be solved in software).

The compact disc has been around since 1978, developed by Phillips and Sony. The reason it was developed was to take over for the Laserdisc as the industry standard digital audio disc. Since its invention, we have seen many updates on the compact disc technology. The most recent being the CD-R and DVD discs. With the CD-R, you can now burn your own discs at home, and then modify those discs at a later date. DVD technology allows us to record video onto a disc, where we used to only be able to record audio and data. As time rolls by, and the disc industry advances, we are presented with new forms of these technologies. The two new contenders are Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVD, here's a little information about each of these new disc types.

1. Blu-Ray

This type of disc, also known as Blu-Ray Disc, is the next generation of optical disc. It was developed by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, a group of consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, including: Apple, HP, Mitsubishi, Phillips, Sony, and others. The Blu-Ray disc type was mainly developed for recording, rewriting, and playing back high-definition (HD) video. It's also perfect for storing large amounts of data, exceeding previous DVD-R disc storage capabilities. It can hold more than 5 times the amount of information that a traditional DVD can hold, up to 25GB single layer, and up to 50GB dual layer. One of the main differences of the Blu-Ray disc is the type of laser that the disc is read with. Normal DVDs are read with a red laser, the Blu-Ray discs are read with a blue-violet laser. The main benefit of this change is the wave length of the laser types. The traditional red laser has a wider focus, so the blue-violet laser can be focused more precisely allowing more tightly packed data. This equals more data in less space on the disc, this results in the additional storage space available on the new Blu-Ray discs. These new discs are backwards compatible with regular DVDs, which they are expected to replace in the near future.

2. HD-DVD

HD-DVD discs, High Definition Versatile Discs or High Definition Digital Video Discs, are very similar to the Blu-Ray discs. This disc type is being developed by a group of consumer electronics/PC companies, headed by Toshiba. They also use a blue-violet laser to read the contents of the disc, which results in an increase in storage capacity compared to normal DVD discs. The HD-DVD can store 15GB single layer and 30GB double layer, making their storage capacity 10GB per layer smaller than the Blu-Ray. But Toshiba has announced a triple layer disc that can hold 45GB of information, and the HD DVD discs can hold both HD DVD and regular DVD information on one disc.

Right now these two disc types are battling it out to become the next generation of DVD disc technology, conjuring up images of the battle between Betamax and VHS in the 80's. I guess we're all wondering who's going to come out on top? In my honest opinion, I believe that Blu-Ray will become the new standard. Both disc types offer HD capability and large data storage capacity, so it's kind of hard to say which is better. The Blu-Ray, with its greater maximum storage capacity and the fact that it's being backed by more of the large consumer electronic/PC/media manufacturers, I believe will win the battle. But it's all still up in the air, so only time will tell.

What kind of TV do I need to enjoy Blu-ray?

This has a resolution consisting of 1920 by 1080 progressively scanned pixels, compared to standard DVD's 720 by 480 pixels. My only problem was the lack of quality audio with the 7.1 analog connections. I have a Rotel 1067 receiver that lacks HDMI connections, but not even remember to replace it. Rotel book every time. The Oppo audio NAC could be the best. I heard a lot of music, SACD and could not be justified simply by holding down the device,Because of audio performance.
